Thaddeus Lewis (born November 19, 1987) is currently listed as a quarterback on the Cleveland Browns active roster after spending time on the practice squad for both Cleveland and the St. Louis Rams. Due to recent injuries to the number 1 and number 2 quarterbacks in Cleveland, Thaddius Lewis projects to be the starting quarterback for the first time in the NFL this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Lewis played at Hialeah Miami Lakes High School under coach Jerry Hughes. As a senior he led his team to the state playoffs and was rated the 65th overall quarterback in the nation. He was so good the school limited him to playing only the fourth quarter, to give the other team a chance. While in high school, Lewis was trained by the well known Floridian quarterback coach, Chris Fahr. Fahr trained Lewis, along with other standout quarterbacks such as Matt Wilde, John Glazier, and Stephen Guenther. Lewis later thanked Fahr for his collegiate and professional accomplishments by giving Fahr his grandparents condominium.
Thaddeus Lewis College Football Career
Lewis played college football for the Duke Blue Devils. While at Duke he set records for career passing touchdowns and career passing yards. He was widely viewed as the best quarterback in the ACC during the 2009 season. Along with head coach David Cutcliffe, Lewis served as a big reason for the recent turnaround of the Blue Devils, as they went 5-7 in 2009, one win away from being bowl eligible. During his senior season he was a finalist for the prestigious Davey O’Brien Award, presented to the nation’s top quarterback.
During his career he threw for 10,065 yards and threw 56 TD against 24 INT over his last 3 seasons.
Thaddeus Lewis Professional Career
St. Louis Rams
Lewis signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent soon after the 2010 NFL Draft. Lewis evaluated the quarterback position with the Rams and felt that he would be a better fit elsewhere so he made the decision to leave the team on September 3, 2011.
The Cleveland Browns claimed thaddeus off of waivers immediately after his departure from the Rams on September 4. Lewis was later waived by the Browns on October 11, 2012. He was signed to the practice squad on October 13, 2012. He was again added to the Browns active roster December 24, 2012 after injuries to Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy. He will make his first NFL career start when the Browns take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 30, 2012.
Since Thaddeus Lewis is yet to take his first regular season NFL snap, most fans will have no idea what he can produce on the field. A recent buzz in the NFL has been about the outstanding play of second year quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers Colin Kaepernick, who made his first NFL start this year and has lead the 49ers to what looks to be an NFC West title which will be decided in the final week of the season.
Can Thaddeus Lewis match the productivity of Kaepernick on the field? We will soon find out.
